PAN @ ND (formerly PIXE-PAN)
is a summer science program for high school students. Preference
will be given to students entering their Senior and Junior years,
but others may be accepted if space allows.
The program introduces participants to the fundamentals
of the extremely small domain of atomic nuclei and its connection
to the extremely large domain of astrophysics and cosmology. The
Advanced Physics Laboratory in Notre
Dame's Jordan Hall of Science which opened in 2006 will
host the program. During the week, participants will perform a series
of experiments using state of the art research equipment. The experiments
will explore topics in modern physics. The goal of the program is
to provide a "hands-on" experience exploring various concepts in
What you learn: Through the use of various
gamma, neutron and charged particle detectors and their associated
electronics, students will learn experimental techniques
used by the experimental nuclear astrophysics community. While the
focus will be on experiments, these will be supplemented by some
lectures, demonstrations and tours.
When: PAN @ Notre Dame will be
held on the campus of the University of Notre Dame from Monday,
June 18 to Friday, June 22, 2012.

Students should have some background in math and science at the freshman/sophomore level.
Students must be recommended by two teachers (at least one from science, lab, or math).
Cost: Free. Lunches are provided. Due
to dormitory regulations regarding youths under the age of 18, students
should reside within commuting distance, or have parental approval
for arrangements involving local accommodations.
