The Joint Institute for Nuclear Astrophysics - Center for the Evolution of the Elements (JINA-CEE) is a NSF Physics Frontiers Center that addresses related fundamental questions about the cosmos:

  • Where do the elements come from that make up our world?
  • What are basic properties of matter when compressed to high density?

We are an interdisciplinary, collaborative network of 24 institutions in 9 countries, with the core institutions Michigan State University, the University of Notre Dame, Arizona State University, and the University of Washington located in the US. More than 300 scientists from different areas, including nuclear accelerator experiments, nuclear theory, astrophysics, and observational astronomy, participate in JINA-CEE, including more than 200 graduate students and postdocs.

JINA-CEE Goals

  • Support and coordinate research that connects expertise from different fields to address some of the most important open scientific questions
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaborations and exchange of ideas across field boundaries
  • Train a new generation of young scientists
  • Organize unique interdisciplinary workshops, schools, and conferences
  • Facilitate dissemination and exchange of data across field boundaries
  • Serve as a focal point for the field of nuclear astrophysics
  • Reach a broad range of diverse audiences with an extensive outreach and education program
