Postdoctoral Position - Nuclear Spectroscopy and Metrology

University of Surrey Guildford , England

Published Mon, 08/05/2019 - 7:55 AM Expiration Sat, 08/01/2020 - 12:00 AM or until the posting is filled

Nuclear Spectroscopy and Metrology is to support our research theme exploring the structure of heavy nuclei by gamma-ray spectroscopy and related methods at experimental facilities including GSI/FAIR; IPN-Orsay and Argonne National Laboratory as part of the FATIMA and DESPEC collaborations. The position will involve the application and utilization of fast-timing gamma-ray spectrometric techniques using LaBr3:Ce and HPGe gamma-ray detectors. In the first instance, the successful candidate will partially within the nuclear metrology group at the UK’s National Physical Laboratory (NPL) using LaBr(Ce) detector arrays to realize absolute standards of radioactive materials as part of the STFC Impact Accelerator Account held at the University of Surrey. Experience in digital data acquisition, event-by-event analysis of such data using formats such as ROOT would be an advantage for this position, which is due to start from September 2019.

The successful candidates will join an established group studying nuclei of structural and astrophysical interest at the limits of accessibility, using a full range of experimental techniques. Candidates should have a proven track record of research contributions in experimental nuclear physics. Previous experience in the relevant spectroscopic techniques and data analysis methods would be an advantage.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professors Paddy Regan (p.regan@surrey.ac.uk); Zsolt Podolyak (z.podolyak@surrey.ac.uk) or Wilton Catford (w.catford@surrey.ac.uk).
